Katherine Smith is a Masters of Music Candidate at Florida International University in Miami, Fl. She graduated from Florida Southern College in May of 2009 with a degree in Music Performance, Summa Cum Laude. She is a member of Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity, as well as Omicron Delta Kappa (Leadership) and Phi Kappa Phi (Honors) Fraternities. Katherine has performed both operatic and musical theatre roles. Highlights include: Flora in Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw (FIU), the stepsister Noëmie in Massenet's Cinderella (FIU), Mimi in Act 4 of La Boheme (Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Institute, 2009), Amelia in Menotti's one act Amelia Goes to the Ball (Fl Southern College), Antonia in Man of La Mancha (FSC), Little Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods (FSC), and The Sour Kangaroo in Seussical the Musical (Melon Patch Players). She has also performed two undergraduate solo recitals featuring music by Handel, Purcell, Mozart, Schubert, Wolf, Hahn, Poulenc, Bernstein, Rossini, Blitzstein, and R. I. Gordon.
Katherine's philosophy of vocal teaching focuses on a natural, healthy, and beautiful sound. She teaches using classical and musical theatre literature. Students will sing in English, Italian, German, Spanish, or French, as well as different styles of music. She also exposes her voice students to sight singing techniques and basic music theory. As her degree is in performance, Katherine maintains a high emphasis on interpretation and understanding a song's full meaning, no matter what language. Singers, above all, are communicating a story.
If you are interested in learning about music history or music appreciation, Katherine received high marks in music history classes, including a course on the Classical and Romantic periods while studying abroad in Salzburg, Austria (the birthplace of W.A. Mozart). She loves music history and studying the evolution of the art form.
***Any interested in piano lessons, please be advised that Katherine teaches only beginning students.* Thank you.
Travel: I am relocating to the Apopka, FL area shortly and will update studio locations then.
Payment Policy: I ask to be paid four lessons at a time in advance. Initially, we will do a trial period of two weeks paid on a week by week basis before a student decides if I am a good fit for their needs.
Cancellations: If I must cancel a lesson for any reason, we will make up that lesson or payment for that lesson will be forwarded to the next month. If the student must cancel a lesson, they are responsible for scheduling a make-up lesson within the week. Otherwise, payment for a cancelled lesson will still be required. I ask for 48 hours notice of a cancellation and I accept death in the family, severe personal illness (fever), or a major car accident the day of the lesson as extenuating circumstances. Other extenuating circumstances are up to my discretion. Cancellation for extenuating circumstances is understood and payment for that lesson will be forwarded to the next month. If a student cancels a lesson for non-extenuating circumstances the week a payment is due, they are still responsible for payment for the cancelled lesson.
