I am a classically trained jazz musician. I've been a professional pianist for 40 years, and a teacher for almost 20 years. Although I am well versed in classical music and its techniques, I teach improvisation. I've been a jazz/improvising musician for all of my life. If you are not interested in learning to improvise, or if you are a beginner, please go no further. You must have a basic knowledge of music and be able to play a composition/song at the piano. You also must be roughly high school age, and be willing to commit your time and energy in order to excel.
You can find out anything you want to know about me by going to my website and/or my myspace page. They are: http://stevelockwood.org or http://myspace.com/jmusesteve. My teaching policies are on a page in the website.
I have written my own text book on the subject of improvisation. It will soon be published, and is entitled, "Essential Techniques of Jazz and Contemporary Piano". This is the course that you will basically be studying with me. The Table of Contents of the book is on the education page on my website.
I look forward to hearing from you, and hope that music is at the center of your cultural life, whatever you do.
